Tennis is an extremely popular sport that originated in England in the late 19th century. The sport first spread throughout the English-speaking world and was played by mostly the upper classes. Today, Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played by all age groups around the world. The game, like other racquet sports is played with racquets and a ball. However unlike other balls, the tennis ball has gone through an incredible history. At first the tennis ball was made of leather stuffed with hair or wool. However, modern tennis balls are comprised with two parts, the inner core and the outer cloth covering. The balls are subdivided in two categories, pressurized balls and non-pressurized balls. Pressurized balls have a core which is pressurized with air or nitrogen. Over a period of time, these balls loose their pressure which decreases their playing properties. Non-pressurized balls on the other hand are made from a thicker rubber core. With the pressure within the core being equal to the ambient pressure, even though the cloth on the outside gradually deteriorates, these balls sustain their playing characteristic for a longer period of time. Currently there are three different types of balls that can be pressurized or non-pressurized. Depending on the court, the tennis balls are selected. One of the most popular tennis ball manufacturers is Wilson. Their balls are used in the US Open, and were used in the 2006 edition of the Australian Open. Other manufacturers such as Penn, Prince, and Dunlop also provide high-quality tennis balls. Premium tennis balls can either be bought in cans of three to four, or also in packs and in bulk. Tennis balls from any manufacturer can be used by both amateur and professional athletes. |
