About Baseball Cards

Baseball card collecting has been a national hobby for decades. The first baseball cards came out around the turn of the 20th century. These cards came with sticks of gum or tobacco 'treats.' One of the oldest and most revered baseball cards of all-time is a 1906 tribute to slugger Honus Wagner. Cards from this baseball era are exceptionally rare and valuable, even if they're in relatively poor condition.Rookie baseball cards tend to be worth more than 'seasoned' cards. This is partially a result of the fact that rookie cards get overlooked by fans when they come out, whereas seasoned cards get collected in great members. Rookie cards for Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays have all sold for over $10,000.Today, four baseball card manufacturers dominate the industry--Donruss, Upper Deck, Fleet, and Topps. Hard-core collectors often gather complete sets from each company and store these sets in 'gem mint' condition for years. The grading system for baseball cards gets quite involved. Even minor creases in the corner of a card can devalue it by hundreds of dollars.Modern baseball cards contain watermarks and intricate designs--they are therefore difficult to counterfeit. That said, baseball card forgeries abound. Before purchasing an exquisite Nolan Ryan rookie card or a mint condition series of the 1960 Yankees, check carefully for authenticity. Some traders have even gone as far as to chemically date cards to guarantee their legitimacy. For extremely valuable cards, you may want purchase special albums designed to protect pieces against microscopic scratching and heat and humidity warping.
