About Baseball

Most myths explaining the origin of the American pastime of baseball are by this time apocryphal. Legend has it that a man named Abner Doubleday spontaneously invented the game. However, close inspections of history reveal that baseball borrowed many of its traditions from the English game cricket as well as from indigenous American sports that were evolving simultaneously at the time. The first Major League play began in 1865, but the first so-called World Series--the ultimate competition in baseball--wasn't held until the turn of the century. This fall contest between the champions of the American League and the champions of the National League pits two teams in a best of seven series against each other. Until recently, no team had come back from a three to nothing deficit to win the World Series or any league championship series. In 2004, the Boston Red Sox, a beleaguered team that hadn't won the World Series since 1918, played to a remarkable comeback against their rivals, the New York Yankees, for the American League championship title. The Red Sox were down three to nothing in the series and fought back to win against the Yankees, four to three. Still, many baseball fans in Boston and elsewhere believed that the Red Sox were eternally doomed to suffer the 'Curse of the Bambino.' (After the Red Sox traded then-pitcher George Herman 'Babe' Ruth to the Yankees, they entered their long dry spell.)Yet despite the Curse of the Bambino, the Red Sox persevered and managed to take down the National League champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, in a four-game sweep. The Curse of the Bambino thus broken, Red Sox and Yankees fans everywhere were astounded. Baseball is a continually surprising and wonderful game--and not steroids, pay disputes, or on-the-field scandals will ever prove it to be otherwise.
