About College Baseball

Division I college baseball teams are pound for pound, equivalent to many strong minor league clubs. Throughout the sport's history, more than 9,000 college players have made the transition from college baseball to the majors. However, just because a player gets a starting place on a Division I college team doesn't mean that he will make the big time--or even qualify to play semi-pro ball in the minor leagues.College baseball features its own World Series and Most Valuable Player Awards. The best and brightest college athletes usually get scouted and recruited by major league teams. Some franchises bring college players right up to the major leagues. Players as young as 15 years old have started in the majors, but most spend a few years in the farm leagues to toughen up and hone their skills.Harvard University won the first college baseball national championships in 1868, and the school continued to dominate into the early 1870s. Harvard's rival, Yale University, soon took center stage, however, and dominated for most of the 1880s. In 1947, organizers held the first College World Series. However, the quality of college baseball declined dramatically in the 1950s thanks to the televising of major league baseball games. The most successful college baseball team of all time is the University of Southern California. The University of Texas and the University of Arizona have also proven themselves time and again in national competition. Thanks to the rise of internet broadcasting, college baseball has regained some of its popularity and momentum. Recruiters now attend even regular season college baseball games in hopes of finding the next great Rookie of the Year.
