About Graded

There are two general types of sports card collections. The first type, a raw collection, is what most average collectors have. This is a set where the collector himself appraises the condition of the cards in order to come up with the worth of a specific item and for the collection as a whole. The second type is a graded collection where the collector sends his cards to a professional agency to learn the true condition and worth of an item.A graded collection offers you benefits that you will not enjoy with a raw collection. Once a card has been graded, it will increase in value. Buyers will generally pay more for a graded card, and they are less likely to engage in haggling with the dealer. Grading, in essence, gives sellers leverage when entering into a transaction. One of the most widely used grading services is Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA), which pioneered the grading scale. PSA/DNA can give you an opinion of 'likely genuine,' 'unlikely genuine,' or in some cases, 'cannot render an opinion.' Other services include Sportscard Guarantee (SGC), Global Authentication Inc. (GAI), and Beckett Grading Services (BGS), which is sometimes considered to follow more stringent standards than the other companies.Even if you are not planning on selling in the near future, having the highlights of your collection graded is a good choice to make. Once a company has graded an item, they will return it to you in a protective cardholder. This ensures that as time goes by your prized cards will not deteriorate in condition, so if you sell in the future you will be able to get top dollar for your items.Graded cards also gives you a claim to authenticity. This is crucial if you have cards that are especially rare. There have been questions of fraud in the past revolving around the most expensive items like the Honus Wagner card, the 1914 Babe Ruth, and others. When a company grades your cards, they will also authenticate them so you will not run into problems when you decide to sell.
