About Hockey Equipment

The game of ice hockey is a full contact sport. Athletes must skate around on cold hard ice on sharp skates. Opponents block the way with long, fast moving sticks. Swatted pucks can reach flying velocities of more than 110 miles per hour. Hockey is also an aggressive physical game. Fights between players regularly break out. Checking (aggressively bumping) is one of the main strategies of play.As a result of all these hazards, hockey players suit up in a diverse array of safety pieces. Players wear masks, helmets, jock protectors, padded jerseys, shoulder protectors, mouth guards, and other specialized gear to stave off the health hazards of play. That being said, many hockey players eschew advanced protections, preferring instead to take their chances on the ice.In the 1980s, controversy swept the professional hockey leagues when the organizing officials mandated that players had to wear helmets during games. Safety advocates argued that NHL players were getting hurt and even killed from head accidents on the ice. Ice hockey 'libertarians' retorted that masks and helmets distracted from the raw, animalistic nature of the sport and obscured players' sightlines.Hockey goalies must wear multiple layers of protective equipment to stave off injuries from high flying pucks. Even still, hockey pucks manage to find openings in goalies' armor all the time.. Thanks to the advent of better mouth guards, however, fewer jaw injuries have been reported over the past few years.
