About Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali is a retired professional American boxer born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., on January 17, 1942, at Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father Cassius Marcellus Clay, Sr. Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. later changed his name to Muhammad Ali on embracing Islam. In 1954, Muhammad Ali went to a police officer named Joe Elsby Martin, Sr., when his cycle was stolen. Joe recognized the potential in Ali and offered to train him. Joe was Ali's coach at the 1960 Rome Olympics where he won the Gold Medal in the light-heavyweight division. Ali acknowledges Martin as the person who taught him how to 'float like a butterfly, sting like a bee'. Ali stood 6'3' tall and had an unorthodox style of boxing as compared to heavyweight boxers of that time. He carried his hands by his side rather than use them to cover his face. Muhammad Ali won his first professional fight against Tunney Hunsaker on October 29, 1960. Muhammad Ali's fight against Joe Frazier on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden is regarded as the 'Fight of the Century'. Frazier won the fight on the basis of points. Ali and Frazier faced each other again in 1975. Ali won the fight after Frazier's coach refused to allow him to continue in the final round. After the fight, Ali was quoted as saying, 'This must be what death feels like.' The fight came to be known as 'The Thriller in Manila'. Ali's boxing career record stands at: Total Fights: 61, Wins: 56, Wins by KO: 37, Losses: 5, Draws: 0, No Contests: 0. He was crowned 'Sportsman of the Century' in 1999 by 'Sports Illustrated'. He is also regarded as the most heavily-promoted sportsperson of all times, and the greatest boxer ever to grace the boxing ring.
