About Soccer

Soccer is without question the most popular global sport. Countries from around the world compete in regional leagues, and these competitions culminate every four years in the World Cup. All told, billions of people everywhere on Earth root for their hometown favorites and heroes--it's a spectacle unmatched in the world of sports. Perennial favorites include Brazil, England, Germany, and Italy. The United States hosted the World Cup in 1994. This event sparked a renaissance in the sport's popularity domestically and led to the formation of the Women's United Soccer Association seven years later, in 2001. The most successful U.S. soccer team in history is the University of North Carolina women's team, which has won more than 16 national titles (and counting) since 1982.The most famous soccer player of all time was Pele, a Brazilian phenomenon. However, two modern stars have challenged Pele for the title of most recognized world soccer icon. Another Brazilian, by the name of Ronaldo, has won national acclaim and the adulation of millions for his aggressive and unique playing style. Ronaldo also won the MVP award for the 1998 World Cup, even though his team, Brazil, lost to the home team, France. The other major modern superstar is David Beckham, who played for years with England's most famous soccer club, Manchester United, before being traded to Madrid's Real team. Beckham is known as much for his on-field play--particularly his bending goal kick--as he is for his off-field antics. Beckham's good looks, bad boy charm, and witticisms have earned him both adulation from fans and barbs from critics.
