About American Stamp

Scores of stamps are issued by the government every year. Commissions meet often to discuss how and when stamps should be presented to the public. Sometimes, the public is even asked to participate. For instance, several years ago, the government came out with the idea for an Elvis Presley commemorative stamp. The post office developed three separate Elvis stamp ''finalists'' and asked the public to vote on which one should go into production. What are some of the curiosities associated with American stamps? During the 1800s, businesses were allowed to advertise on government stamps. In more recent times, the United States built both the largest and tiniest post offices in the entire world. The biggest one is, unsurprisingly, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The tiniest one is located in the hamlet of Ochopee, Florida.Philatelists (stamp collectors) keep track of the scores of new stamps issued by countries around the world every year. Error stamps--those initially produced by governments but discontinued for one reason or another--tend to fetch huge amounts from dedicated collectors. Indeed, the desirability of such rarities have caused scandals, both at home and internationally. One of the most famous of these debacles occurred overseas but involved U.S. stamp collectors peripherally. A man named Nicholas Seebeck got a contract with a number of South and Latin American countries to produce their stamps and keep the extras to sell to collectors. He insisted that new stamps be printed every year, so as to maximize his return on investment. The U.S. Postal Service works diligently to squash any modern attempts to domestically pull such a scam, making the American stamp a fun and often profitable collector's item.
