About Covers

Postal stamp first-day covers (a.k.a. first day of issue) tend to be highly prized by collectors. Strictly defined, a ''first day of issue'' stamp is one which gets postmarked on the first day of a stamp's run. For instance, the Canadian 1997 Grizzly Bear stamp was ''first issued'' in the city of Banff, Alberta as a means of honoring the iconic grizzly bear featured in the design. It's difficult to discriminate between ''first day issue'' stamps and ''earliest known use'' stamps. After all, post office disorder and bureaucratic snafus often confuse records. If a stamp goes on sale but fails to sell, its ''earliest known use'' may come months after than its ''first day of issue.''Philatelists often engage in long debates over the differences between ''EKU'' stamps and ''first day of issue'' stamps. A British first-day cover (FDC) received extensive international acclaim. This stamp, which commemorated the marriage of England's Prince Charles and Princess Diana, was issued on July 22nd, 1981 and garnered instant attention from the world philatelist community.Certain local post offices have the option to sell first day issue stamps for up to five days. Hard-core philatelists often go to great lengths to secure covers in their original cities. The U.S. Postal Service and Universal Postal Union both put out special announcements about upcoming releases of first-day covers, so stay tuned to their websites for up-and-coming issue events.
