About German Stamp

Today's German postal bureaucracy is highly organized and integrated into the Postal Service of the European Union. It only costs a half a euro to send 20 g parcels anywhere within Germany or within the E.U. To send missives to the United States or to Britain, you may have to tack on an additional half a euro to the price tag.The German postal bureaucracy and stamp distribution system was not always so neat and tidy. Following the Austro-Prussian war of the 1860s, Otto von Bismarck developed a new bureaucracy for the Prussian Empire. Beginning in 1868, this loose confederation of Prussian states began to organize a postal system. Separate stamps were issued for the northern and the southern districts of this Prussian federation.It's easy to tell these two kinds of stamps apart. The northern district stamps were emblazoned with the words ''Norddeatcher Postbezirk.'' These northern stamps also featured ''circled'' price numbers as opposed to the ''ovaled'' price numbers of the southern district. The federation's postal service also released a unique quarter-shilling issuance, emblazoned with the words ''Stadtpostbrief Hamburg.''The Prussian confederation's success at organizing its postal system failed to protect the institution against dissolution. Only four years after it began to issue stamps, the confederation's post gave way to the post of the German Empire, which started issuing its own prints almost immediately. Since the Prussian confederation series only lasted four years, collectors pay top dollar to get rare issuances from this series. German philatelists are particularly fond of northern district stamps.
