About Latvia Stamp

The postal history of Latvia is rife with tumult. Latvia as an independent republic has been overrun by Germany and Russia multiple times within the past several hundred years. Its excellent access to the Baltic Sea and natural resources have made it a prime target for these bigger nations. Poland and Sweden have, at certain points, also conquered Latvia.Russia was one of the first signatory nations to join the Universal Postal Union in 1874. Russian stamps were used on Latvian mail starting approximately in 1857. However, during World War I, German occupation forces seized control of the Latvian postal mechanisms and over printed Russian stamps with the German words ''Postgebiet Ob. Ost.''Further confusing matters, during 1918, prior to the liberation of Latvia from Germany, East Latvia fell into the control of Russia while Germany grabbed West Latvia. You can find stamps from this period with both German and Russian overprinting. In November of 1918, as World War I concluded, Latvia officially proclaimed its independence.Almost immediately, a new Latvian postal system began operating. The first Latvia stamp of the newly free nation was created in the office of ''A. Schnakenberga'' in December 1918. All told, 17 separate post offices opened up, even though Latvia was still officially under occupation. Over the next 20 years, until World War II, Latvia's postal system flourished, producing millions of stamps. Automatic cancellation machines were eventually introduced to speed up mail service and to add a touch of regional flair to delivery.
