About Latvian Stamp

The Latvian postal system successfully created an organized bureaucracy during the 1930s, but then German troops rode into town and shut down native stamp production. From June of 1941 until May of 1945, German stamps were the postal currency of the land. These stamps were oftentimes printed-over Latvian and Russian stamps with the word ''Ostland.''After World War II hostilities ended, Latvia almost immediately fell into the hands of the Soviet Union. From 1945 until 1991, Latvians employed Soviet stamps in their day-to-day correspondence. Finally, on August 21st, 1991, the independent of Republic of Latvia was reborn. Celebrations were held in the capitol, Riga, and the government issued over 300 different stamps to celebrate the nation's new autonomy.Starting in 1937, the nation's postal administration developed a unique way of canceling mail. Using British technology, Latvian postal workers were able to cancel stamps with horizontal and/or vertical bars. These two kinds of cancellations were unceremoniously dubbed ''A'' and ''B.'' During the early days of 1940, coincidental with the Olympic Games in Finland, the cancellation machines mysteriously stopped working for a period of four days. Some speculated that foreign operators were at work. However, chances are that Latvian postal officials simply got confused by the change of the year. In any event, this goes to show that the Latvian stamp history is rife with bureaucratic curiosities. A keen eye may be able to pick up on other interesting stories buried in the details of Latvian stamps.
