About Newspaper Stamp

For a few short years during the 1860s, United States encouraged the use of newspaper stamps for bulk deliveries of periodicals. The first stamps came into use in 1865, partially as a way to discourage individual routing agents from collecting money intended for the federal government. These stamps are among the largest, most ornate, and most curious in the entire U.S. postal catalog. One of the reasons why these U.S. newspaper stamps were created on such a large--2 inches by 3 3/4 inches--and colorful scale was to deter forgeries. After all, with the country mired in the early days of Reconstruction, the federal government was pulling all the strings it could to keep the tattered nation from falling apart even further. Newspapers stamps were issued in three denominations: 25 cents, 10 cents, and five cents. As a result of the fact that newspaper stamps were, first and foremost, practical productions, many were destroyed during the course of business. Most of the stamps which survive to this day are bit-up, marked, or canceled by large, brash blue strokes. One of the most famous newspaper stamps included a 10-cent blue-green stamp of Benjamin Franklin.A 25-cent Abraham Lincoln stamp, five-cent George Washington stamp, and a 100 dollar Indian Maiden stamp were also released. By the time Reconstruction was in full gear, Congress decided to pull back on the newspaper stamp program. It was abandoned in 1869, around the time that the U.S. Postal Service was repaired enough to start up its traditional payment plans again.
