About Olympic Stamps

Sadly, there are no postal stamps dating back to the original Olympic Games held in Greece. However, ever since the modern Olympic Games restarted in 1896, philatelists and collectors everywhere have used the international athletic form as a means to promote their hobby. Indeed, during the very first year, over 10,000 Olympic stamps were printed, many of which are worth hundreds to thousands of dollars today. One of the reasons why the Olympics came together in the first place in 1896 was that stamp sales were able to partially subsidize the Games. All told, some 75,000 stamps were printed in Athens around that time from eight different post offices. Historians have pieced together precisely how the byzantine 19th-century Athens postal system operated by examining Olympic stamp distribution.Subsequent Olympic stamp issuances have shed light on other cities' postal systems. The 1912 Games in Stockholm, Sweden, for instance, revealed how that country's domestic bureaucracies operated. Yet beyond the insight Olympic stamps provide into the workings of individual nations, they also suggest a growing global understanding of commerce and shared history and culture. The history of Olympic stamps reflects the trials and tribulations of the athletes, countries, and cities which have participated in the Games. Conspicuously absent countries, heroes, and fallen angels have all impacted Olympic stamp collections. No doubt, further research into Olympic stamps will suggest even more interesting insights into the Games.
