About Persian Stamp

The kingdom of Persia boasts a rich postal tradition. Even back in ancient times, the Mesopotamian empires supported large postal bureaucracies. While the stamps and postmarkings of those days may be lost to history, the legacy of the Persian post lives on. That being said, as relations between Iran and its Western neighbors have worsened over the course of the last 25 years, the efficiency of the Persian stamp and postal apparatus has similarly declined. In 2005, the Iranian government released a perplexing series of stamps celebrating secular figures. One of these stamps, issued in June 2005, documented the 70th anniversary of Iran's major Medical University. Another one paid respects to one of Iran's most beloved football stars, Ali Daei. These seemingly minor issuances have gone relatively unnoticed by the mainstream press. However, ''Iran watchers'' definitely take notice when the government changes the figures it puts on its stamps. Given the close and guarded nature with which the Iranian theocracy governs, its postal stamp choices provide some fresh insight into the thinking of the government. That said, it might be easier to find a Persian stamp from the pre-Iranian Revolution Era, such as the 1974 Regional Carpet series or the 1974 Seventh Asian Games series.Iranian stamp collectors would do well to equip themselves with a book called the ''Lions of Iran.'' This catalog documents potential forgeries, counterfeits, and accidental reproductions, which many Persian stamp collectors run across during the course of business. It should be noted that the zinc plates used to print Iranian stamps may be counterfeited, as well. The ''Lions of Iran'' book warns of zinc plates forgeries that took place during the early 1920s.
