About Philatelic

The term ''philatelist'' (or ''stamp lover'') comes from a French stamp collector named George Herpin. He came up with the term in the late 1860s at a time when adhesive stamps had only been in common circulation for about 20 years. Stamps revolutionized the way that people communicated over long distances. Prior to their advance, recipients actually had to pay post carriers for their services.Once stamps became universally available, letter writers were forced to foot the bill instead. Recipients thus no longer had to pay taxes to the government. Seizing on this idea, Herpin combined the Greek prefix ''phil,'' which means ''to love,'' with the Greek suffix ''ateleia,'' which means ''not having to pay taxes.'' Herpin's term proved catchier than another description of stamp collectors, ''timbrophiles,'' which briefly flourished during this early era of stamp collecting.Philatelic societies sprung up the world over. Even in North Korea, the world's most isolated nation, the Korean Philatelic Society thrives. Indeed, these societies serve as excellent networking points for neophyte and veteran collectors alike to share gossip, stories, and advice on how to locate the stamps necessary to complete their sets.There are many international philatelic organizations, such as the Universal Postal Union, which was formed in 1874 to standardize postal practices. However, to get detailed help putting together arcane stamps, you may want to turn to focused national or local philatelic organizations. Over 200 countries produce dozens of new stamps every year, so these philatelic institutions are always busy with taxonomic homework.
