About Postage Stamp Value

Philatelists base postal stamp values on a host of factors, including condition, age, rarity, markings, coil numbers, and the presence or absence of adhesive. Stamp collecting as a hobby has been around since the advent of the very first stamp, the Penny Black. Perhaps the most recognizably ''valuable'' postage stamp features an inverted picture of a 1900s biplane. The stamp, commonly referred to as the ''Inverted Jenny,'' was printed 1918 and was intended to honor the American entrepreneurial spirit. (Only 15 years earlier, the Wright Brothers had captured the world's imagination by engineering the first airplane. The Curtis Jenny was a failed attempt to beat the Wright Brother's ''Spirit of St. Louis'' into the sky.) Only 100 Inverted Jenny stamps got printed. Each one of these errors sells for approximately $150,000 in today's money.Curiosities abound about this legendary postage stamp. It was meant to christen the U.S. Postal Service's airmail service to major cities along the East Coast. At the time of its publishing, the Jenny stamp cost 24 cents, which was a phenomenally high price back in the early 1900s. The Jennies were printed in batches of 100, and only one of these batches contained the famous inversion error.Another famous valuable stamp is the 1888 Canadian Christmas stamp, which features a red map of England. Not all stamp oddities and errors end up being worth lots of money to collectors. If you do come across a potential rarity or error, make sure to verify the stamp's authenticity by showing it to several knowledgeable stamp dealers or by testing it chemically.
