About Postal History

Postal history is rife with interesting stories, colorful characters, and prized treasures. In the earliest days of mail carriage, private carriers would often be paid out of pocket for special deliveries. In Portugal in the Middle Ages, the Postmaster General assigned to deliver the royal mail received treasure and kickbacks galore. The country's citizenry could not afford courier service, however, so Portuguese peasants developed ad hoc mechanisms for transmitting information long distances.By the turn of the 19th century, however, egalitarian revolutions in a number of European countries forced leaders to develop more effective institutions to help citizens communicate with one another, a change which greatly affected the arc of postal history. Initial postal services were local, spare, and ad hoc. Recipients had to pay for letters on delivery. Forgeries abounded, and it proved very difficult to send valuable packages long distance.Noblemen often hired armed troops to move precious letters even within their countries. Unarmed postal workers proved easy targets for bandits. Even the United States Postal Service, which established robust service early on in its postal history, encountered serious trouble. U.S. postal workers fought against natural elements, thieves, and even each other for control of territory and for delivery power. The world's post systems changed profoundly during the mid-1800s, soon after Great Britain instituted its revolutionary universal penny postal system. Recipients no longer had to pay to get their mail, and senders could pay a single price for delivery anywhere within the country. In the several decades following the 1840s revolution, dozens of nations joined with England to form the Universal Postal Union.
