About Postal Stamp

Mint postal stamps endure as classic collectors items. Yet what exactly constitutes a mint stamp? Philatelists disagree. Some require that stamps be so-called ''post office fresh.'' In other words, these stamps must never have touched hinges, envelopes, or any other backings. Other philatelists use looser definitions for ''mint.'' To them, unused stamps of any kind may be considered mint. The debate over postal stamp conditions isn't merely semantic posturing. A postal stamp's declared condition can have a profound effect on its value. For instance, consider the Penny Black, largely viewed as the most well-known postage stamp in the pantheon. In mint condition, the Penny Black today sells for $3,000. In used condition, it sells for only $200 or so.To preserve mint condition stamps, many philatelists employ what's known as a stamp album. This is an expandable volume with removable rows and columns for stamps. Many collectors develop a ''one stamp per page'' strategy. However, collectors who focus on plate number coils often like to gather their stamps together in bulk. These albums usually contain detailed descriptions of stamp coloration, condition, and the like.World class postal stamp collections have sold for millions of dollars. The famous Australian philatelist, Ray Chapman, netted somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 dollars in 1946 for his collection. Fellow Aussies, Josiah Lilly and Alfred Caspy, garnered over two million dollars each for their collections, which both sold in the 1960s. Individual postal stamps, like the ''Inverted Jenny,'' can sell for over $100,000.
