About Stamp Auction

To prepare your stamps for sale at a stamp auction, you should first have any unusual or potentially highly prized pieces evaluated by a professional. Certain valuable stamps, such as World War I issuances of rare local Polish stamps, tend to engender a lot of suspicion in veteran collectors. It's better to take care of any potential counterfeiting problems before you go to a stamp auction.Should you mount your stamps vis-à-vis hinges or keep them in a protected padded album? Ideally, you would keep all of your rarities in specialized steel vaults. However, there is a cost-benefit factor to consider. If a padded album runs you on the order of $200, and your most precious stamps go for only $15 or $20 each, it may not be worth it to spend hundreds of dollars on preservation paraphernalia. To prepare for your stamp auction, gather as much information about your stamps as possible. Philatelists love details. You may need to provide anything from the plate number coil, to the date of issuance, to the name of the person from whom you originally acquired the stamp. Tracing the pedigrees of some of these rare stamps can prove tiresome, but the research will be worth it, particularly if you net a few thousand dollars for a rare item.To prepare for online auctions, photograph your stamps in the best possible light. That said, don't worry or distort old stamps just for the purpose of photography. A standard digital camera and a one paragraph description should be enough for most low to medium value stamps. If a collector wants more information or photos, you can always take ''zoom-in'' pics and e-mail them.
