Gene Autry founded the Angels baseball club in 1979. They take their name from the city of Los Angeles, where they played their first five seasons, before moving to Anaheim after the 1965 season and becoming the California Angels. Under the management of Jim Fregosi, California won its first division title in 1979. From 1979 through 1986, the Angels won three western division titles. The lineup at this time included Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Bobby Grich, Rod Carew, and Don Baylor. Baylor became the first designated hitter to earn most valuable player in the American League. In 1983, the California Angels had a 93-69 win-loss record under manager Gene Mauch and looked to be headed for the pennant. Milwaukee shattered those hopes by defeating the Angels in the American League Championship Series. After a brief retirement, Mauch returned and led the Angels to their third division crown. In 1996, the franchise was purchased by the Walt Disney Company and they became the Anaheim Angels. In early 2005, the team's name was changed to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, much to the dismay of fans. The change was made by the team's owner, Arte Moreno, to give them a broader appeal to Southern California in general, rather than Los Angeles in particular. Play continues at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and LA Angels tickets are readily available. Angels tickets sell quickly and attendance at Angels games is quite high; recent statistics show they are third in the league in terms of attendance. See More Angels Tickets at Stubhub! |
