The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest football franchise. They date back to 1898, originally playing in Chicago, Illinois. They had their start with the Morgan Athletic Club and were owned by Chris O'Brien. They got the name Cardinals from a sports reporter because of their faded red uniforms.

Because of a failed plan to build a new dome in St. Louis in 1988, the Cardinals owner, Bill Bidwill, moved the team to Arizona. The Cardinals now play at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, in the West Division of the NFL.

The Cardinals had their best seasons in the decades of 1920, 1940 and 1970. They had one of their strongest backfield lineups in 1947. At this time, the lineup stared Paul Christman, Pat Harder, Elmer Angsman and Charley Trippi. It was during these golden years that the Cardinals won two NFL titles and four division crowns.

The Cardinals returned to the playoffs in 1974, after 26 years. At this time they were coached by Don Coryell who was named the league's top coach. Jim Hart and Terry Metcalf shared Player of the Year awards. In the upcoming decades, the Cardinals achieved several winning records but only made it to postseason once. They have never played in the Super Bowl. The Cardinals now play in the recently opened University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, and are led by the offensive talents of Matt Leinart, Edgerrin James, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Bolden.
