The Cleveland Browns originally played in the Central division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. In 2002, they became part of the North Division of the AFC. The team moved to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Ravens in 1996. In 1998, a new Browns franchise was awarded by the NFL to Al Lerner and Carmen Policy and, thus, the Browns once again played in Cleveland at the Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Cleveland Browns were founded by owner Arthur McBride in 1946 and Paul Brown was named coach and General Manager. Paul Brown was actually the inspiration for the name of the team, although he resisted the idea of having a team named after him at first. Many people think that the name Cleveland Browns was picked in honor of Joe Louis, the famous boxer who was known as 'The Brown Bomber.' In actuality, a newspaper contest was held and most of the entries favored naming the team after the coach. Coach Brown circulated the story that they had named the team after Joe Louis, even though none of the contest entries mentioned Louis. See More Browns Tickets at Stubhub! |
