The Lakers are a team with unquestionable star power. All through their history they have been home to athletic superstars like Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, George Mikan, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain. More recent superstars on the team have included Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. They were not, however, founded in Los Angeles. They were originally the Minneapolis Lakers, and they moved to Los Angeles in 1960. Los Angeles is unique in having two basketball teams, the other one being the L.A. Clippers. Other big time rivals include the Sacramento Kings and the Boston Celtics. From the very start, this was an elite ball club that continuously set remarkable records. They dominated the NBA and, before that, the NBL and the Basketball Association of America. As the Minneapolis Lakers, they won six championships in seven years. When they moved to L.A., they fought with their rivals, the Boston Celtics, who took championship wins from them six times. Finally, in 1972, they won their first championship in Los Angeles. It took until 1979 for them to win another championship. This was done with a MVP performance from Earvin 'Magic' Johnson. The Lakers again won three consecutive championships in 2000, this time with help from Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Gary Payton. If you're interested in seeing the Los Angeles Lakers in action, individual Lakers tickets can be purchased quite cheaply if you're okay sitting in the nosebleed section--the Staples Center is huge and the cheapest seats are very far away from the court. If there's a particular game you want to see but the traditional sources are sold out, try to purchase your Lakers tickets through online auctions. See More Lakers Tickets at Stubhub! |
