About Mets Tickets

The New York Mets are named after the 'Metropolitans,' who were a team from a much earlier era. Indeed, the early history of the Mets is rather interesting: they were created because the largest city in the nation, New York, found themselves without a ball club back in 1957. The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants had both left New York for California, so William Shea tried to form a third league called the Continental League. After a lot of dickering with the other major leagues, it was decided four new expansion franchises would be allowed if Shea dropped the idea of his new league. New York was to receive one of these new teams and, in 1962, the New York Mets played their first game. They did not get off to a good start. They lost their first nine games and their winning percentage was the third worst of any team since the beginning of the twentieth century. Things, however, were quick to turn around and in 1969 the Mets had their first winning season and NL pennant. With help from Tom Seaver--who made a Cy Young Award winning effort--they won their first World Series Championship against the Baltimore Orioles. They were quickly dubbed the 'Amazin'Mets' and 'Miracle Mets' for this amazing and unexpected change of events. One of the most memorable moments in Mets history is their World Series win in 1986. Pitted against the Boston Red Sox, the teams played all seven games. The Mets, who were down 2-3, narrowly escaped elimination in the sixth game, when Bill Buckner, the Red Sox first baseman, committed a costly error that allowed the Mets to win the game 6 to 5. The Mets then went on to win the seventh game and the entire World Series championship. Today the Mets continue to play before sold-out crowds in their very own Shea Stadium. Soon they will have a brand new stadium - Citi Field, targeted to open for the 2009 season. Of course not every game sells out, but a good portion of them do, especially when they're playing their crosstown rivals, the Yankees. Fortunately, unlike many sports teams with avid fans, it is generally possible to buy single game Mets tickets in addition to season Mets tickets, and the prices vary according to the location of the seats--their cheapest seats are quite affordable. However, if there's a particular game you want to attend and you want to make absolutely sure that you have really great seats, you might consider going through a secondary source, like an online auction, for your Mets tickets.
