American Flyer is a popular brand that designs and manufactures toy trains and railroad models in the United States. American Flyer trains were essentially manufactured in Chicago, Illinois. The American Flyer brand was popular, essentially in the mid twentieth century. American Flyer is best remembered for its S-gauge trains of the 1950s. American Flyer was initially an independent company that originated in the early half century. American Flyer Company is also known as the Chicago Flyer and was a budget brand. In the late 1930's, the American Flyer line was taken over and bought by the A.C. Gilbert, Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. A.C. Gilbert Co. was headed by A.C. Gilbert, who invented Erector sets and various such toys. A.C, Gilbert Co. was then acquired by the Wrather Corporation in the early sixties. American Flyer is now a registered trademark of Lionel Trains Inc. American Flyer trains manufactured clock work trains that became popular among children. Later, they started manufacturing wide gauge and 'O' gauge electric trains. American Flyer also designed and manufactured two rail tracks, 3/16 inch and Pull-Mor Power toys. American Flyer manufactured engines, cars and other such rolling stock. The American Flyer line of trains always offered realism and interesting accessories with their range of trains and toys. American Flyer line of trains were affordable and an eye-candy for many children. Today, American Flyer trains and other toys are regarded as collectibles. Many rail-road models, in the S-scale have been inspired from the American Flyer. Many accessories produced by American Flyer are in demand at present, and used by Lionel operators as well. |
