Baby Chrissy Doll

The Chrissy doll was designed at the Ideal Toy Corporations prototype department in 1968. The stylish doll which is about 18 inches long has autumn coloured hair. The doll comes with adjustable hair, which can be made long or short. Apart from having stationery hair rooted to the dolls head, there are additional strands of hair inside the dolls head that can be extended to make them long. An American Character Doll Company originally thought of the creative idea of the doll that grows hair. However, the Ideal Corporation later obtained the Patent for the mechanism of this doll around 1960's. Baby Chrissy doll was introduced in 1973 with a diaper set. She was made to represent a 9 month old baby and almost all the dolls were available in black and white colors. By 1981, she was wearing a one piece romper in white. When a knob located on the Baby Chrissy dolls back was wound on an internal rod or spindle, the dolls hair fully or partially extended. A one-way ratchet is formed from the design of the knob and the body mold along with internal spring tension. A button on the dolls tummy when pushed and held disengages the locking rachet to allow hair to be pulled back out of the doll's head. The main appeal of the Chrissy doll was its ability to 'grow' the dolls hair, and these adjustments of different hair styles, and hair lengths attracted the kids. There were re-issues of the Chrissy doll in the 1980's.
