Digimon, is a popular Japanese series of kid's merchandise which include, manga, toys and anime, featuring monsters of diverse forms living in a 'Digital World'. Digital Monster toys were popular among kids with four different colors being released the same year. A month later, the second generation of Digital Monsters was released. It has been criticized by many as being a clone of Pokemon. The Tamagotchi bears very little resemblance to the TV show or card game of Digimon. Pokemon and Digimon may share a few things in common like being positioned towards the North American children and being part of the same genre, but they differ in original concept, design, spirit, and target audience. Digimon made its first appearance in an illustrated form with the coming of the one-shot manga 'C'mon Digimon' released in the summer of 1997. Digimon appeared on game for the first time in January 28, 1999 with the Digimon World game for Playstation, making its foray into animation a few months later. With the release of the first Digimon movie in 1999, television series of Digimon began airing on TV the same year, with three other series that consecutively released one after another. There have been eight Digimon films released in Japan, with all the movies except the eighth one being distributed and dubbed internationally. Some of the Digimon comics include, C'mon Digimon, Digimon Adventure V-tamer 01, Digimon Chronicle, Digimon Next, D- Cyber and Dark Horse. Dark Horse Comics, have been published in American Digimon style comic books, derived from the first 13 dubbed episodes of the first animated series. The release of Digimon Mini in 2005 marked the 10th anniversary of Digimon products. |
