About Pedal Cars

Pedal cars became popular shortly after Henry Ford invented the first mass-produced motorized car during the American Industrial Revolution of the 1890s. These kid-sized versions of different makes and models of cars, planes, trains, and other vehicles were a popular toy for children back in the early 1900s and remain popular today. They are powered by manual pedals, as their name suggests, and are typically made from aluminum, wood, or steel over wood frames. Back in their original versions, the early pedal cars even featured cranks on the front, just the like original big brother, the Model T. Later, headlights, crankless engines, and even decals were added to pedal cars to modernize their look. Today's pedal cars feature spaceships, rockets, and jet airplanes for bodies. Classic pedal cars still remain collectors' items and valuable pieces of the nostalgia from the Industrial Revolution and WWI and II eras. Beautifully enameled die-cast renditions of cars, trucks, and bi-planes can be found in online auctions for varying prices. Their value depends on several things, including the make, model, manufacture date, condition, and rarity. While not all pedal cars are worth a tidy sum, some can sell for thousands of dollars if the interest is there. The most is paid for those that are still fully working, with pedals that move the wheels (and propellers when applicable), steering wheel that steers, and even chrome hubcaps made popular by heavier, 1930s versions.
