Spinning WheelPresumably invented in India, the spinning wheel was a symbol of Indian independence made famous by M. Gandhi, the Father of India. The spinning wheel evolved around the concept of the drop-spindle. The device spins the raw material into long fibers of thread by twisting it. The spinning wheel works on man power, by hand or by a foot pedal. A large wheel is spun, which turns a smaller wheel with the help of a drive band. The spinning of the small wheel causes the thread to twist which is then wound and collected on a spindle. There are different types of spinning wheels. The walking wheel, also called the great wheel is used for spinning wool, the flax wheel is used for spinning linen, the saxony wheel is used to spin worsted yarn, and the chakra is a small spinning wheel used to spin cotton. The chakra is small and portable and can be easily made at home. It's also a great wheel to start-off with. A number of books have been written about how to spin and how to make spinning wheels. This occupation has now turned into a hobby for many people who are interested in knitting and stitching. Spinning yarn is, according to Gandhi, one way to truly find peace of mind.
