A swing is one of the favorite past times for children the world over. A swing is hanging seat suspended from a wooden or metal frame. A swing set is a set of swing seats allowing more than one child to swing at one time. Swings come in different sizes and shapes. Swings for infants and toddlers are designed with holes in the seat for their legs. This keeps them in an upright position, preventing them from falling off. Swings designed for use by older children are made out of flexible canvas, rubberized ventilated tire tread, vinyl, plastic or wood. Swings commonly found in a backyard, are constructed out of a wooden plank suspended from a tree branch. Children shift their body weight to increase the height of the swing, termed as pumping, to as high as 15 feet (5m) above the ground. Swings are available in ready to assemble kits as well as from professional manufacturers such as the Gorilla and PlayNation PlaySystems. Such types of sets are packed in boxes with pre-cut, pre-sanded and pre-drilled wooden or plastic parts along with required hardware tools, accessories and manuals for assembly. Wooden swing sets are commonly built out of Pine or Redwood. Wooden swings are quite heavy and need to be guarded against water and snow to prevent warping. Although wood gives a much more traditional look and feel while swinging, plastic swing sets are now much lighter and durable compared to wooden swing sets. They can withstand rough weather all year long and are virtually maintenance-free. |
