About Classic Systems

The first home video console, released back in 1972, was Pong. Pong, released by Atari, was basically table tennis adapted for a video screen. Atari later released the Atari 2600 (originally titled Atari VCS, for 'video computer system'). This vintage console revolutionized the home video market by having the games on a cartridge rather than having the games pre-loaded on the machine. The graphics, by today's vibrant three-dimensional standards, were crude and blocky. Yet at the time, the Atari 2600, first released in 1977, was state-of-the-art and incredibly successful.Anyone who was anybody had an Atari. In fact, the name 'Atari' became synonymous with home video games. Home versions of popular arcade games, like Pitfall, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong, were adapted for the Atari. There were even Atari games based on popular movies, most notably E.T. (This game is considered by many to be the worst video game of all time, and it led to the bankruptcy of Atari not long after its release.) Competing systems, like the Intellivision, simply couldn't compete against the juggernaut of Atari. Atari, in 1982, released the 5200, the first so-called next-generation machine. The 5200 represented an upgrade in graphics and technology--and today is one of the best classic systems on the market. As popular as the Atari was, in the mid-1980s, the first Nintendo home video game system was released, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). This vintage system came bundled with the game Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt, all on one cartridge. As popular as the Atari had been, the Nintendo became the system to own. As far as classic systems go, this one is perhaps the most popular and most playable.Today, nostalgia is big business. As such, there is a niche market for these classic systems. Nintendo systems are surprisingly available, though condition is something to keep an eye one. Intellivision consoles are much harder to come by. Also, you may need to buy cables to connect your vintage consoles to your current TV.
