About Counter Strike

Originally conceptualized by Minh Le ('Gooseman') and Jess Cliffe ('Cliffe'), the Counter Strike team was formed in 1999. Le had been working on models and textures for the Quake mod Navy Seals in 1997, featuring modern day weapons, body-armor and tactical game-play. Following this venture, he released Action Quake 2, a highly successful mod for Quake II. This mod featured a team of SWAT assassins pitted against gangsters; hence the name Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike gained in popularity by the release of its fifth beta by the end of 1999. November 2000 saw the launch of Counter-Strike 1.0, the official standalone retail version of the game. Counter-Strike or CS, as normally referred to by its fans, is team-based, tactical First Person Shooter (FPS) game involving a grueling round of fire arms exchange between a team of Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists. The winning team emerges by eliminating the members of the opposing team completely. A team member emerges from any of the eight different character models, four each from the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists team, loaded with $800, a knife, a Heckler & Koch USP, a pistol - .45 Tactical for Counter-Terrorists, and a GLOCK 18c for Terrorists, and two magazines of respective ammunition. The initial seconds of the game, known as 'freeze time', is provided for players to buy equipment and ammunitions while restricting their ability to move around and attack. Later, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero was released which saw a host of new features and the addition of two extra character models. November 2004 witnessed the launch of Valve's latest installment of Counter-Strike christened 'Counter-Strike: Source'. It is based on the new engine platform, Steam, which was introduced in Half-Life 2. Counter-Strike has more than 19.5 million legal owners being the most widely played online first-person shooter as of May 2006. Statistical figures state the existence of over 30,000 online game servers on the internet in 2002, with over 200,000 players simultaneously online at any given time, in 2006. Valve's content-delivery platform, Steam, calculated over 4.5 billion minutes of playing time each month by players, making it the most popular online first-person shooter in history.
