Before Fable was released on the Xbox console in September of 2004, creator Peter Molyneux infamously hyped up the title as the most open-ended game in video game history. Perhaps Fable's working title of Project Ego was a reflection of the creator's own personality, as many features he promised never materialized. Nevertheless, despite the absence of these features, Fable was still a critical success. Fable's story centers around a male character referred to in the game only as Hero. When this hero was a child, the town his family lived in was raided and destroyed by unsavory characters that also killed his father and abducted his sister and mother. Shortly after, he was taken in by the Hero's Guild where he was trained and grew to become a true hero. As an adult, Hero began a quest to find out what happened to his family and why. In Fable, how you customize your character will affect how other people in the game respond to you. For example, if you cover your character with tattoos and chain-mail armor, non-playing characters in the game will cower with fear in your presence. Keep a clean-cut appearance, and you will find that they admire and respect you. Little touches like this can go a long way to giving players the feeling that their characters truly are unique. A sequel of sorts to the Fable Xbox game was released, titled Fable: The Lost Chapters. With the growing title list for this series, RPG fans have plenty of options, as each game is quite unique. Plus, as more titles (such as Fable 2) are introduced, the prices on the original continue to drop, bringing the original Fable a larger fanbase. |
