About Game Cube

One look at the Nintendo Game Cube and it's easy to see how the console got its name. The unit is an almost-exact six-inch cube. Nintendo released the Game Cube in the fall of 2001 as its next-generation machine. Nintendo, as everyone knows, is no stranger to the home video game market. The first Nintendo gaming console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (or NES), took the gaming community by storm when it was released in the 1980s. In fact, the NES (and the Super NES) dominated the home market for nearly a decade. Nintendo's next machine, the Nintendo 64, faced stiff competition from Sony's PlayStation but still managed to sell quite well. The Game Cube offers a significant upgrade over every previous Nintendo system. The Game Cube has been optimized for sheer performance, with stellar graphics and sound. While the Game Cube will play games released cross-platform, it is the only console to play games developed by Nintendo in-house. This includes such now-classic video game characters and games such as Donkey Kong, Mario, Perfect Dark, and Pokémon.Unlike the other next-generation machines released in 2001, the Game Cube only plays games. The discs are approximately three inches in diameter, so the Game Cube cannot play DVD movies, CDs, or MP3s. This was a conscious decision by Nintendo to have the Game Cube concentrate solely on gameplay. Some gamers have viewed this as a detriment, and Nintendo may have agreed, since the next-generation Revolution will have the capability to play DVDs.
