About Game Systems

The fall of 2001 was a tough time for cash-strapped gamers. Three competing next-generation game systems were being released at approximately the same time. Two were eagerly anticipated--the Nintendo GameCube and the Sony PlayStation 2--while the other, the Micosoft Xbox, was an unknown quantity. Both Sony and Nintendo had long been successful in the home video game console market. Sony had released the original PlayStation, which became the preeminent game system shortly after its release. 'PlayStation' became nearly synonymous with video games to a lot of people. But what PlayStation was to the '90s, Nintendo was from the mid-'80s through the mid-'90s. Not that the Nintendo 64 wasn't successful (it was), it just didn't sell as well as the PlayStation. But with the release of the original Nintendo Entertainment System in the mid-'80s, Nintendo grabbed the lion's share of the market and held on to it for the better part of a decade. The release of Xbox game systems, though, had some gamers worried. Microsoft, as a company, was viewed suspiciously (whether or not this is fair remains debatable). The Xbox had a lot of trepidation to overcome, but eventually it did. While gamers generally didn't like the size (Xbox is the largest of the three), the Xbox's performance more than made up for it. Part of the reason for the size are the 8GB internal hard drive and Ethernet port that come standard on the Xbox. Also, the graphics for the Xbox are arguably the best of the three systems. As game systems continue to evolve (Nintendo Revolution, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 are predicted to outsell their original versions), gamers can look forward to more advanced games.
