'Wheel of Fortune' is a popular game show that airs in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Spain and many more. It was first broadcast in the United States on January, 6, 1975, on NBC. With the concept designed by Merv Griffins, 'Wheel of Fortune' derives its name from the huge wheel that signifies the prizes to be won by the contestants. The show runs for half-an-hour. The format of the show involves three contestants competing against each other. Prior to starting the game, the players draw numbered dices to determine their positions in the game. They are then designated the colors red, blue, and yellow. The red player begins the game by spinning the wheel, buying a vowel, or solving the puzzle on the board for which three categories are available. However, with the introduction of the electronic puzzle board and Toss-Up puzzles, the format of the show underwent a change. The player who could solve the second Toss-Up puzzle started the show. When the show first began, the contestants were given the option of taking the prizes kept in the studio after winning a round. Since September 1987, the game shifted to the all-cash format. Later on, a lot of other rounds were incorporated in the show as well. Initially hosted by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford, 'Wheel of Fortune' has been hosted by numerous other hosts since. However, the day show was cancelled from September 20, 1991. The game show also has a night-time version that first debuted on September 19, 1983, and is hosted by Patt Sajak and Vanna White. Telecast by King World, the present version is the longest-running one. |
